Pritikin Diet
Pritikin diet was developed by Nathan Pritikin and is a plant based
diet that emphasize very low fat around 10%. The
diet consist of eating low calorie but nutritionally
dense foods with bulk such as vegetables, fruits,
legumes (beans), whole grain such as brown rice,
oats, and barley. These foods provide plenty of bulk
without a lot of calories, therefore you feel full
with less calories. Foods should not be processed,
rather they should be whole foods that are typical
of fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes.
Benefit:
Great for lowering cholesterol and for people
with heart disease because of it’s low fat content.
Plant based foods are very nutritious and naturally
low in fat.
Our Evaluation:
Good diet if you can follow it. With so much
emphasis on plant based foods, this diet is not for
everyone but it does have merits. Plant based diet
when structure with proper calorie limitation will
help you lose weight. Pritikin diet also encorages
daily exercise which makes this a good plan.
The main issue with the Pritikin diet is the extremely low fat
content. Staying below 10% fat is very difficult to
maintain for most people, especially if you must eat
out during the week.
Also, dietary fats are necessary to help
maintain body fuctions and contrary to popular
opinion, essential fats in the right amount help you
lose weight.
