Macrobiotic Diet
The Macrobiotic diet means
“long life” in Greek and was originally developed by
a Japanese educator named George Ohsawa and later
expanded by
Michio Kushi. This diet uses 50% consumption of whole
grains such as brown rice, millet, corn and barley.
The grains should be unprocessed and as close to
it’s natural state as possible. Kiss your meats
good-bye except for occasional fish or seafood twice
a week. Essentially a vegetarian diet of 50% whole
grains and 30% vegetables.
Beans make up 10% of total consumption.
Fruits, nuts and desserts make the remainder
consumption.
Theory behind diet is that a
diet rich in whole grains and vegetables will help
you lose weight when you eat only when you are
hungry and chew slowly and thoroughly before
swallowing.
Benefits:
High fiber diet that is beneficial in lowering high
cholesterol and keeping your bowels regulated.
Our
Evaluation: Too restrictive unless you are
already a vegetarian. Diet lacks important nutrients
such as proteins, iron and magnesium. Eating only
when you are hungry can be tricky for most people
since so many people are emotional eaters. There are
better diets that are more sensible than the
Macrobiotic Diet.
